'Seema Sastry', as the title suggests, is a total spoof-both on typical temple Purohits (played by the protagonist) and factionists from Rayalaseema (played by his lady love's family). It makes fun of both the sides without being partial and stereotypes blatantly to bring out the humor. After all the movies we've seen glamorizing the violence, this movie comes as a breather. The typical behavior and lifestyles are the basis of the comedy and the actors, gags and one-liners come in handy to keep the movie entertaining.
Plot:
Subramanyam Sastry falls in love with Surekha Reddy, who is actually the daughter of a factionist. His parents oppose the match, but they like the girl and seeing how serious he is, they decide to help him. They all land up in Rayalaseema pretending to be hardcore factionists to win Peddi Reddy's consent. Comedy and confusion follows.
Story, Screenplay and Direction:
The basic story has been done to death, but it's the spoofing part that's fun. Even the screenplay is predictable, but even when we know we are going from point A to point B, the journey has to be bearable. This journey is not only bearable, but pulls gag after gag out of it's bag to make it more humorous. Of course, some double-meaning dialogues, skin-show courtesy the ever-dependable Mumait Khan and the female lead and extreme stereotyping of both the communities shown are part of the package.
Towards the climax, the movie drags slightly before coming to a hasty and expected end. Flatulence jokes are yesterday's news, used to create more gags and laughs. There is a sequence where the Sastrys trap Peddi Reddy's stooge, Gangi Reddy because he recognizes them. The execution is not believable, and it is overdone.
The love story between Subramanyam and Surekha is not at all convincing, but you forget that once the comic element sweeps in. The first half of the first half is okay, still managing to set the funny mood. Till the break and most part of the second half is fun, with scenes like Brahmanandam teaching Naresh, MSN, Ali and LB Sriram to act like a Rayalaseema Reddy. In spite of the predictability and the jerky editing, middling music and some clichéd jokes, you enjoy yourself. The advantage of the movie is the casting-all the actors from Naresh to MS Narayana, Ali to Krishna Bhagwan are used well.
Performances:
Naresh has carved a niche for himself. He needs some more time, roles and finesse. The female lead is stiff. MS Narayana, Ali, (all the other comic actors) have been cast well and do justice to their roles.
Music and Dance:
Very 1980s. Complete with a group wearing matching outfits gyrating behind the main leads. The music and the picturization of the songs don't help the movie. Oh but the skin show might interest a section of the audience.
Last Word:
It's a spoof, and a spoof that has worked. Barring the music and some other loopholes, in entirety, it's a fun movie that one can sit through. It's a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, and believes that the viewer won't too. This is just for laughs.
