Director Prabhu Deva is well known for his experimental film and his direction for 'Nuvvastanante Nenoddantana' is remarkable. His second film 'Pournami' is different from that of modern days.

'Pournami' is based on a custom "natya nivedana" (dance offering) set during 16th century. A lady (Archana) living in a draught affected village performs dance incessantly in a shivalayam for seven days with the devotion of Lord Shiva. After that the village turns green with rains, people start to believe that her effort brings luck and offering dance at a regular interval of 12 years, by a girl of that family becomes a practice.

With that theme, movie takes you to the year 1953, with the introduction of dance teacher's (Chandra Mohan) family. His elder daughter is Pournami (Trisha) and younger daughter is Chandra Kala (Charmee). He marries another woman (Manju Bhargavi) when his first wife (Sangeetha) dies. He teaches dance to Pournami. But she escapes from the village with the help of his father when her stepmother tries to surrender her to the zameendar (Rahul Dev) of that village on the name of "natya nivedana". She goes place to place with a Banjara tribe to find bread.

Shiva Keshava (Prabhas) falls in love with Pournami. Flashback shows him as a killer who takes vengeance of his brother's murder. Pournami dies when the rivals try to gun down Shiva and asks him to carry out her wish of offering dance, at the temple of their village, by her sister Chandra Kala. How hero could puts his promise in effect standing against all the odds is the remaining story. Performance:
Prabhas' dressing style reminds us of 1960’s. He did very well as the protagonist. Trisha did the title role well. Charmme got major pie in the film and she justifies her role. Sindhu Tolani did a small role but apt. Archana impresses with her dance. Music by Devi Sri Prasad is good. Lyrics by Sirivennela deserve a special appreciation. There are some flashes of brilliance in Prabhu Deva’s direction in certain scenes. It proves once again that though all the technical elements are up the standards, story should be able to convince the audience, especially in this kind of period films.

Verdict: Adequate
