'Naani' starring Mahesh babu and Amisha Patel was inspired by Tom Hanks Hollywood blockbuster 'Big'. There was a big hype among the industry over this movie since a year. Manjula, after the success of her first venture 'Show', had decided to go for a huge budget film on the same banner. SJ Surya, who had directed successful film like 'Khushi', was given the responsibility of providing story, screenplay and direction for the film. But his direction did not match up to his previous films. Screenplay and narration of the movie was very slow and boring. The movie gave more importance to the romance between the lead characters than the mother-son bonding, which was a major setback of the movie.

StoryNaani (Maheshbabu) an eight-year-old was always nagged and scolded by his mother (Devayani) for every work he does at home. He had ideas of a young man like running motorbikes, watching video films, going to pubs. Once, his mother chides him and heart broken Naani decides to end his life. Science (Raghuvaran) prevents him from that attempt and questions him, why he wanted to die. Naani reveals everything and Science promises to make him a young man. He gives an injection and this eight-year-old turns a 28-year-old. However, his mind did not rise to that level. In order to show him employment, *Science attributes his assistant Vijaykumar alias Vijji's (Sunil) qualifications to Naani. As a result, Naani gets a job in a toy company. Priya (Amisha Patel) is the daughter of the company's MD (Nazar). She falls in love with him. Naani reveals his secret to his childhood friend.

Later, Naani realises that his mother loves him so much and is not taking food after he disappeared from home. So, he pleads with Science to convert him as an eight-year-old, because he could enjoy the youthful life after he becomes young, but could not get back his mother's love at the age of eight. Science again gives him an injection to make him a child. Naani happily goes back to his house and makes his mother happy. But around 6 pm, Naani again turns 28-year-old. So, he goes back to Science, only to learn that the drug is only at experimental stage and he will remain a boy from 6 am to 6 pm, and a man from 6 pm to 6 am. So Naani falls in a piquant situation. As Priya loves him, she continues to meet Naani during nights and one night she proposes to marry him and takes her father for alliance talks. On the other hand, the toy shop manager (Brahmanandam), who is also the friend of the MD, had plans to get Priya married to his son decide to eliminate Naani, but could not do that. All his attempts go futile and some how Naani marries Priya and Priya becomes pregnant after a few months. Naani gets increased responsibility. He had to be the son to a mother from 6 am to 9 am, go to school from 9 am to 4 pm, complete homework between 4 pm and 6 pm, go to Priya and serve her as husband and after she goes to sleep, go to the office and complete the office work. Because of his busy schedule, he could not offer chocolates to his childhood friend, who reveals the secret to Priya. She goes to Science to know whether it is true. Meanwhile, the toy company manager kidnaps all the people, including Priya, Science, his assistant Vijji, Priya's father, Naani's father (Sanjay Swaroop) and mother. In the climax everyone comes to know how Naani was turning from eight-year-old to 28-year-old. When the villain (Brahmanandam) tries to grab the entire property of Priya, Naani bashes the goons and saves everyone. Finally, this eight-year-old turns a father with Priya giving birth to a baby boy. The film ends with the hero maintaining the same age gap all through his life.
Music None of the tunes are catchy. A.R. Rehman completely dissapoints with his background score.
Performance Mahesh Babu's performance was impressive. His histrionics in pathos scenes were authentic. Amisha Patel also gave good performance. Comedy by Brahmanandam, Ravibabu, Ali was not really amusing. All the other characters also gave good performance.
Verdict Flop
