The most celebrated Telugu art film director 'B Narsing Rao' has chosen his own style of narrating the story in an offbeat format. The film is very realistic and it studies the psychology of the kid who is undergoing a trauma. AK Bir's camera work for the film is extraordinary. Dialogues are very minimal and realistic in this film. The entire film was run with five main characters, with four or five others making a guest kind of appearance.

Coming to story, Ravi (Sai Subhakar) is the only son to his parents (Bhanuchander and Harita). He takes ill and the parents come to know that he was stuck by cancer and will not live long. Though they were ready to sacrifice anything and spend a fortune for his sake, doctors make it clear that he could not survive. The only thing they can do is to keep Ravi happy as long as he lives. In order to maintain the mental balance, the doctors advise Ravi's parents to take him to a psychiatrist, who could give him a positive counseling. They silently bear all the agony. Though a child, Ravi understands that he would not live long.

At this juncture, their servant maid brings her niece Gowri (Baby Nitya) to Ravi's house. Ravi befriends with Gowri. When Ravi's mother Nalini (Harita) tries to prevent Gowri from moving close to him, Ravi feels bad. As the main aim of the family is to keep Ravi happy, Nalini allows her to move freely with Ravi. They start playing and moving together. In the middle, Dr Mandakini, the psychiatrist, keeps talking with Ravi and used to tell him to be brave and courageous and tells him to be friendly with her. When asked, Ravi tells Dr Mandakini that he love playing with Gowri. Once, both Ravi and Gowri leave home without telling Ravi's parents on a picnic to Golconda Tombs. While both were playing there, Ravi turns unconscious. In the climax, doctors declare that none can save him and to bring him out of coma stage, some miracle should happen. Gowri comes to him and cries before him. When she starts singing a song saying his butterfly came to meet him, Ravi comes out of coma. The film ends here leaving it to the audiences' thoughts whether he survived or breathed his last.

This film is of one and half hour duration. There are no songs or comedy in the film. Harivillu is made to cater the international audience who have a taste for art films. The main purpose of this film is get handful of awards. Hence, this film does not offer any popular entertainment that is typical of regular commercial films. This film has already entered the Cannes film festival as a nominee for the year 2003. Over all, it's a good art film.
